Understanding IV Rank

What is IV Rank?

IV Rank (IVR) measures where current implied volatility sits relative to its own 52-week range. A reading of 80 means IV is higher than 80% of all readings over the past year — it is elevated. A reading of 10 means IV is near the low end of its recent range.

How IV Rank is calculated

IVR = (Current IV − 52-week Low IV) / (52-week High IV − 52-week Low IV) × 100. The result is always 0–100. Unlike IV Percentile, IV Rank uses the high and low endpoints rather than the distribution of all daily readings.

What it means for options sellers

When IV Rank is elevated (60+), options premiums are relatively expensive compared to recent history. Premium-selling strategies — credit spreads, iron condors, cash-secured puts — may collect more premium when IVR is high, all else equal.

What ranges are considered elevated

Most practitioners consider IVR above 50 as moderately elevated, and above 70 as elevated enough to favor premium-selling structures. Below 30, options are relatively cheap and debit spreads or long calls/puts may offer better cost efficiency.

Why IV Rank is not a standalone signal

IV Rank tells you whether options are cheap or expensive — it does not tell you direction, whether to trade, or whether the setup is sound. It must be combined with liquidity analysis, event risk screening, reward/risk evaluation, and technical structure before any entry decision is made.
